Who are we? The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) is a pioneering social enterprise that supports people using entrepreneurial approaches to tackle complex social problems. Our vision is of a fair and equal society where the potential of all individuals is fully realised.
SSE operates a social franchise model. Each school is independently constituted and governed and all are led by people who understand the local context and what is needed to bring about social and environmental change in the place in which they operate.
Originally founded in East London in 1997 by Michael Young, who believed that “everybody has the capacity to be remarkable,” SSE has now become a global network, with 12 schools operating across the UK, and schools in Canada and India, supporting over 500 social entrepreneurs across a range of sectors each year.
What do we do?
We do learning differently…
SSE invests in individuals from all backgrounds who have practical ideas for change. We have an outstanding track record in supporting people to start, sustain and establish social enterprises, charities and community projects that create a sustainable solution to address an identified but unmet social need.
We work with:
- Social entrepreneurs who are looking to get a new idea off the ground
- Social entrepreneurs who want to grow or scale their impact
- Leaders of establishes social enterprises and charities, and their staff, who want to become more enterprising or develop skills in specialist areas.
We run learning programmes and courses, provide support and give grants, build partnerships and share our evidence and insights, always with the positive benefits to our learners firmly in our minds.
Individuals who graduate from our programmes remain an important part of our community and we work hard to continue connecting people through our programmes and courses, mentoring, events, networking and peer to peer opportunities on an ongoing basis.
Achieving social and environmental change is often a long-term goal, which is why, when our programmes come to an end, our support doesn’t.
